Connecticut faces an eviction crisis, with four of our major municipalities having some of the highest eviction rates in the country. Periods of economic downturn, such as that brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, only serve to expand this crisis. Nationwide, 90% of tenants face eviction from their homes without the assistance of counsel, navigating a difficult and expedited court process against landlords who are predominantly represented. Numerous studies have shown that stable, decent, safe, and sanitary housing is crucial to the health, education, and future welfare of a family. Evictions have numerous long-term collateral consequences for families, causing instability and preventing access to housing opportunities in the future.
