About the Program
As attorneys, part of our responsibility is to keep abreast of local and national family law issues and trends in divorce and family law, including with respect to support, parenting, custody, alternative approaches and processes, and proposed legislation.
This annual seminar provides an overview of emerging national trends in family law, the current status of the law in Connecticut, and insights on the possible impact of these trends on Connecticut jurisprudence. This year will include discussion of national trends and practice insights regarding the Uniform Parentage Act, issues pertaining to disability in the dissolution context, important considerations relative to concerns for substance use and/or abuse in family matters, in addition to other current trends.
In addition, this program will review currently pending Connecticut House and Senate bills that relate to family law, highlight the trends that this pending legislation seeks to address, and discuss potential effects of this legislation on marital and family law practitioners and the families they serve. We will discuss the current legislative session, focusing on pending legislation

Modern Divorce: Emerging Family Law Issues, Trends, and Legislation
You Will Learn
- The current legislative climate with regard to Connecticut family law statutes as illustrated by pending and/or proposed litigation.
- Interpretation of the larger issues that these bills seek to address, and discuss how those issues – and the current proposed solutions – impact both the family law practitioner and Connecticut families, as well as how said proposals track with national trends.
- Review and discussion of the Uniform Parentage Act including national trends regarding same, and the impact it has on family law practitioners, and as relates to changing approaches regarding presumption, surrogacy, etc.
- Considerations and issues to watch for when one of the parties has a disability, including issues pertaining to benefit eligibility, benefit treatment, and the treatment and impact on estate plans and planning documents of pending and finalized dissolution action.
- Review of approaches, impacts and developments following the tax treatment changes for spousal support.
- Considerations and options for addressing situations involving concerns for drug or alcohol use and abuse and particularly as pertains to issues of custody and parenting, including treatment options, review of court authority, remedial orders, treatment options, etc.

The Connecticut Bar Association/CT Bar Institute is an accredited provider of New York State CLE. This program qualifies for transitional and non-transitional CLE credits.
